Audition Requirements

Students wishing to begin their music study at the freshman level should perform two compositions of contrasting character (such as a slow movement and a faster one). Those wishing to demonstrate their ability to improvise in a jazz or contemporary style are welcome to do so, but this demonstration does not substitute for the previous requirement. In addition, students will be asked to play their major scales (at least in the keys required for North Carolina All-District competitions). As members of the National Association of Schools of Music, we ask prospective students to sight-read a brief excerpt, although this will not determine a student’s eligibility for admission to the program.

A composition suitable for an all-district or all-county competition would be acceptable for audition at Greensboro College. If you need further assistance with your audition pieces, please contact Professor Neill Clegg at cleggn@gborocollege.edu, telephone at (336) 272-7102 extension 288.

Audition requirements for voice:

Vocal auditions consist of the student presenting three selections, from memory, with legible sheet music provided for our accompanist. Two of the selections should be classical in nature (art song, aria, oratorio, sacred song, etc.) and the third may be anything of the student’s choosing, as long as it demonstrates the vocal ability. A rehearsal with our accompanist is usually possible prior to the audition and there are practice rooms available for warm-ups.
