Audition requirements for Instrumental Auditions

Students wishing to begin their music study at the freshman level should perform two compositions of contrasting character (such as a slow movement and a faster one). Those wishing to demonstrate their ability to improvise in a jazz or contemporary style are welcome to do so, but this demonstration does not substitute for the previous requirement. In addition, students will be asked to play their major scales (at least in the keys required for North Carolina All-District competitions). As members of the National Association of Schools of Music, we ask prospective students to sight-read a brief excerpt, although this will not determine a student's eligibility for admission to the program.
A composition suitable for an all-district or all-county competition would be acceptable for audition at Greensboro College. If you need further assistance with your audition pieces, please contact Professor Neill Clegg at cleggn@gborocollege.edu, telephone at (336) 272-7102 extension 288.
Audition requirements for voice:

Vocal auditions consist of the student presenting three selections, from memory, with legible sheet music provided for our accompanist. Two of the selections should be classical in nature (art song, aria, oratorio, sacred song, etc.) and the third may be anything of the student’s choosing, as long as it demonstrates the vocal ability. A rehearsal with our accompanist is usually possible prior to the audition and there are practice rooms available for warm-ups.

Five years ago, we created a Concert and Marching Band. The bands have grown in quantity and quality due mainly to the efforts of Benjy Springs, a seasoned band director of more than twenty years, and professional trumpet player. Other instrumental ensembles include a Brass Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and a Wind Ensemble.

Greensboro College prides itself in having seven of the finest jazz players in the Carolinas on faculty; in 2001 they formed the faculty jazz ensemble, Seven Steps, and have been performing ever since.

Our choral music program continues to create memorable Choral and Chamber Singers concerts guided by the conducting expertise of Dr. Jonathan Brotherton, clinician, adjudicator, choral and instrumental arranger and composer. Singers also have the advantage of working with Artist-in-Residence Robert Overman, operatic baritone, who enjoyed an outstanding international singing career for more than twenty years. The Opera Workshop provides acting training as well as experience in both opera and musical theater. Full productions of both musicals and operas are also offered. Both vocal majors and singers who are not majors enjoy the energy infused into the programs by the voice faculty and frequent visiting professional artists.

Music Education majors are given opportunities to observe and assist public school music teachers in the local school systems as early as their freshman year and no later than their sophomore year. The Greensboro College Teacher Education Program is known throughout North Carolina for its excellence; for two years in a row it was cited by North Carolina SDPI as the top program in the state. The Collegiate Music Educators Association, made up of music education majors, is an active professional student organization, having won Chapter Excellence Awards at the state convention four consecutive years. Our students are fortunate to be in a state where the professional music educators' organization, the North Carolina Music Educators Association, is a strong advocate for its pre-professionals and supports their education at its conventions.

This is a great time to be involved in Greensboro College Music. While many students across campus participate in music programs, the number of music majors and minors has increased dramatically. Projections for next year indicate another increase. Currently, students may receive a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music, a Bachelor of Music Education Degree, or a Certificate in Church Music.
